The Latest Change in Michigan Post-Reform Auto Insurance Medical Reimbursements, and What That Means for You
Posted on September 4, 2026
If you work in the Auto Injury field or have personally been impacted by an auto incident that requires medical care in the state of Michigan, you are almost certainly aware of the 2019 Auto Insurance Reform. The reform significantly changed how medical providers are reimbursed for services provided to people injured in auto accidents. In 2026, Michigan issued updated guidance addressing reimbursement for home health aide and skilled nursing services provided under no-fault auto insurance. At the same time, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) announced a 16.38% annual adjustment to rates billed by home health care providers beginning July 2, 2026, through July 1, 2027. These developments are important for home health care providers serving Michigan auto-injury patients.
What is the 2019 Auto Insurance Reform Law?
The 2019 Auto Insurance Reform Law made several stipulations that had a ripple effect throughout the auto injury world, most notably the following:
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage became available at different coverage levels, including an option to maintain unlimited PIP medical coverage.
- Auto insurers have provided more options to reduce premiums under certain provisions of the reform.
- Certain non-driving factors could no longer be used by insurers when determining auto insurance rates.
- Additional consumer protections and insurance oversight were established.
What Changed for Home Health Care and Skilled Nursing in 2026?
This year DIFS issued Bulletin 2026-09-INS announcing a 16.38% adjustment to certain amounts payable under Michigan’s auto insurance medical fee schedule. The adjustment applies to amounts that were in effect on January 1, 2019, under MCL 500.3157(7) or (8), for dates of service from July 2, 2026, through July 1, 2027. This reimbursement is set to increase year over year.
